Using the Outline Template
You can download an outline template (a Microsoft Word document)
to help you complete your outline for the information speech. The template is a
formal outline, filled in with text from a student outline to show you what a
formal outline should look like. If you use this template, you can properly
format your outline with little inconvenience. I strongly suggest you not try to use any outlining resources in Microsoft Word.
Here is how to fill in your own outline:
1. Triple click on any existing text to
highlight it. (Or swipe across it with a mouseís left key held down.)
2. Type your sentence. (The original words
should automatically disappear; if they donít, use the Delete key to eliminate
them.) DO NOT replace any parts of the outline except the studentís original
text.
3. When you donít need an outline subdivision
(such as "C" or "3"), delete the line.
4. When you need to insert a new
subdivision, place the cursor at the end of the sentence immediately above
where you want to insert, and press Enter. Your cursor should be properly
positioned to add the new subdivision. If not, copy the style from existing
text formatted as you wish and paste it into the new line you wish to add. You
can do this using the formatting painter in Word. (Look for a paintbrush symbol in your tool bar.)
TROUBLESHOOTING
TIP: If Microsoft Word
performs undesired formatting -- such as inserting unwanted letters and numbers
and changing the indentation -- go to Format menu, click AutoFormat, click
Options, choose the "AutoFormat As You Type" button, and deselect (so
that there is no checkmark) these two choices: "Automatic Bulleted Lists"
and "Automatic Numbered Lists."
5. The first time you save your document,
choose "Save As" in the File menu and provide a new name for the
file. (This will preserve the original file and its sample.) I recommend you do
the ěSave Asî soon after you open the document.
6. To replace Bibliography entries, do the
same as with text, as described above. The proper hanging indention should be
retained. I will provide you with an MLA style sheet to help in determining
which format is source requires.

of an outline, click the links you see on the left side of the web page.
